DYING EGGS NATURALLY

Easter is coming soon and if you’re dying eggs and want an alternative to the commercial products, try some of these naturals which can be found in the most unassuming items in your spice rack, herb garden or vegetable bin.

There’s a little more work in using natural materials, but it’s a fun change of pace and an “eggsperience” for the entire family.

 

 

Method:
1. Add 3-4 cups of water to a medium stainless steel, glass or ceramic pan
2. Add 4tsp white vinegar
3. Add natural dye material
4. Bring to boil for 30 minutes
5. Boil eggs for 15 mins or if you want to keep decorated eggs, boil 3 hours, then set aside to cool and dry thoroughly
6. Once dyed and dried completely, finish by polishing the eggs with a little vegetable oil and nestle the eggs in a basket of grass.

Colors:
Pink - Beets (4 cups shredded)
Moss Green - Fresh Spinach (3 cups)
Sky Blue - Red Cabbage (4 cups shredded)
Terra Cotta - Yellow/Red Onion Skins (3 cups)
Bright Yellow - Ground Turmeric (1 Tablespoon)
Lavender - Hibiscus Flowers (1/2 cup dried)
Ecru - Coffee (Strong brewed instead of water)

Designed Eggs:
Select a small leafed fresh herb and place a sprig on a raw egg, then wrap in a piece of cut pantyhose and tie with a twisty to secure the herb. Place eggs in a pan and follow the above directions using your choice of natural dyes. (My favorite is to use onion skins because the eggs look like natural brown eggs with an herb design!) When cool, remove eggs, unwrap pantyhose and an impression of the herb will be on the colored, perfectly cooked egg.
